Not long after the tragic passing of Nintendo’s iconic President, Satoru Iwata, the famous video game company would begin searching for his successor. On September 14 2015, a little over two months later after Iwata’s passing, Nintendo announced that Tatsumi Kimishima would be named their new President.

Kimishima has been involved with Nintendo in the past. Having involvement with the Pokemon franchise from 2000-2002. During that time, he was involved with the development of the critically acclaimed games Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. Kimishima is the former President of Pokemon USA from 2001-2002. In January of 2002, Kimishima would become the president of Nintendo of America, succeeding Minoru Arakawa. He served four years in that position until fan favorite Nintendo staff member, Reggie Fils-Aime took his place. He was then promoted to Chief Executive Officer of the Board of Nintendo of America.

Under his leadership, Nintendo dominated the holiday season of 2006 with the launch of the Nintendo Wii, selling out the system worldwide. Then in 2013, when Satoru Iwata took his place as CEO, Kimishima was promoted to managing director of the company. Now in 2015, he will be taking the stage as the new president of Nintendo. This announcement certainly did not go unnoticed by the gaming community. Phil Spencer, Head of Microsoft’s Xbox Division, addressed the news on his Twitter, wishing Nintendo and Kimishima the best of luck.

“I don’t know him but Nintendo is great gaming with amazing track record, I’m sure he’ll do great, I wish him well, said Spencer via Twitter.

One of the first things that came out of this was Kimishima addressing the struggling sales of Nintendo’s current home console, the Wii U. According to a Japanese report, Kimishima predicted the Wii U would struggle due to its similarities to Nintendo’s previous console, the Wii.  The Wii U has currently sold slightly over 10 million units in almost three years since it’s release, which is currently on pace to become Nintendo’s worst selling home console in their history.

Kimishima also revealed in an interview with Japanese newspaper, “The Nikkei,” that he is currently elected to only a one year term as company president. His future beyond that is unclear, but for now, he will be faced with the task of putting Nintendo back on top of the gaming industry once again.
