Despite great optimism the men’s basketball team continued to struggle through the early portion of the season.  On January 13th Bulldogs lost to Rowan college with a final score of 83 to 76.

Following the loss, the team’s record took a hit falling to 4-15 on the season, and 1-10 against conference opponents. The Bulldogs were in a poor stretch where they have tallied two wins in the last ten games. Despite the early season struggles, the spirit of clubhouse did not seem to fracture.

In fact, after the loss to Rowan college the Bulldogs have maintained an impressive 4 wins over their last 6 games. Yohanly Ortiz, who is the starting point guard on the team, said, “The vibe around the clubhouse is great. We get along pretty well, and look out for each other.”

Considering the fact that the team did not enjoy great success at the beginning of their season, it was impressive to see how determined the players were to get back on track. A big reason for that is the leadership role, Ortiz has taken alongside his teammate Nolan Van Rye.

The men’s basketball season has 5 games left on their remaining schedule. First year coach Ozzie Osbourne believes that the players have the ability to finish the season on a high note.

Flowing the loss to Rowan College Coach Osbourne said “We are currently struggling and it’s not because of lack of effort. We had 5 or 6 games that we lost because as a team we don’t shoot free throws and the defense at times is not good.” This sense of confidence on his players has definitely been a huge reason why the Bulldogs are playing great basketball as of now with wins against Atlantic Cape Community College, Passaic County Community College, Community College of Philadelphia, and Sussex County Community College over their last 6 games.

The Bulldogs will face Union County College on February 8th at Bergen Community College. With a 8-17 record and five games left on the schedule, the Bulldogs have a chance to finish the season strong, as noted by Yohanly Ortiz, “ All upcoming games for us are important.” The Bulldogs seem prepared for a great stretch before the season ends on February 20th.
