Halfway through the season, Bergen Community College’s women’s basketball team record stood at 6-8.  Losing three straight games before the winter break has made it a long season for Head Coach Tracy Green and company.

Bergen’s last win came at home on Dec. 15 against Cumberland County College.  At the time BCC had a record of 6-5 with a league record of 5-4. Since then, losses on the road in league play has cut their winning record down to 6-12 and 5-10 respectively heading into the Break.

The Lady Bulldogs last regularly scheduled game of 2011 came by way of a December 22, 61- 44 loss via Gloster County College.  Bergen would not play another game until the new year.

Jan 12, the Borough of Manhattan County College (BMCC) gave Bergen their fist loss 49-47.  Followed by a Jan 19, win over Camden Community and a Jan, 24, 74- 52 loss to Brookdale.

“It’s a long span and tough to keep them focused ” said Green.

Bergen has to go 7- 5 after the break to make the playoffs.  Over this stretch, Bergen will have five rematches of teams they beat earlier in the season. They include, BMCC 43-40, Camden 46-42, Passic 91-90 in overtime, Sussex 52-27 and Cumberland 53-42. The time has come to defeat them once again.

Coach Green thinks they can do it but does not think it is going to be easy.

“Previous wins were close. We need to pick up two other wins from teams we didn’t beat yet to make it to the playoffs,” she said.

Two players are slowly re-entering the line-up.  Co-Captain Yojaira Orozco and Katherine Hernandez. Orozco mildly re-injured her ACL, and now wears her brace in games to protect it.  Katherine Hernandez broke her foot, has missed about five games and will miss another two before she gets her cast removed.

“It will be good for us when she’s back,” said Green.

Coach Green said she feels her team has matured; all of her players are freshmen except for Co-Captains Kayla Dziewa and Orozco.

The Region 19 tournament is at the end of February and Bergen needs to be .500 at that time in order to be entered. The Lady Bulldogs hold hope that they will see that victory.
