Counting is the core of basic math. Once kids learn to count by 1, they are introduced with skip counting. This is to count by a number larger than one. It can be by 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 and even by 20 or 100. There are many benefits of learning it at elementary grade levels. Kids can use easy skip counting worksheets for the task. Once kids know how to count by 2, 3 or higher numbers, this can help them learn many other math skills. To get smarter in math, kids need good mental math skills. Students who are competent at this skill, can add and subtract numbers easily. For example, to add 4 to 15, they need not to go up by 1 but they can go up by 4 to add in one step. This broadens their imagination power about number sense.
However, get back to your child afterward to find out how far it has gone - math can be very frustrating, especially if the child lacks a strong foundation in the topic it is working on. The basic skill you require in order to successfully assist your child with its 3rd grade math worksheets problems is to be able to identify the difficulty. Does it lack the requisite skills that it should have already possessed for the work at hand? If that is the case then it is best that you take the child back to the missing link, so that your it learns what it is missing and move forward.
Students who are not ready to move on to do fraction work (or decimals or percentages) are either unsuccessful the rest of their math careers, or memorize the algorithms and get stuck later in higher level math courses. Either case requires extra help to survive high school or college math curriculum because the developmental phases in mathematics cannot be avoided. If a student did not understand a fundamental concept such as fraction operations, they will not be successful in learning topics that use these ideas, such as solving equations, graphing linear relationships, or manipulating precalculus problems.
